A special thank you to Dr. Joseph Caporusso for his continous support, leadership, and years of service to the children of McAllen ISD.  It is because of caring individuals like Dr. Caporusso that our children are able to succeed.

Attendance and Tardies
Your child's daily attendance is critical not only for your child to succeed academically but for the school to "make the grade". To meet AYP, our school must have an attendance rate of 97% or better for the academic school year. Anytime a student is absent, this counts against the school (AYP). We ask that children be kept at home only if the child is ill. Please do not schedule trips/vacations during the instructional year. Help your child be successful by getting your child to school everyday and on time. Please refer to school board policy regarding loss of credit for students who have more than 9 absences or more.  Tardies are considered a partial absence and will be considered for loss of credit/credit recovery purposes.
Be A Volunteer!
If you are interested in volunteering at Perez Elementary, please contact your child's teacher, Mrs. Cooksey, or Mrs. Scott, PTO President.  Please read the section in the student/parent handbook regarding volunteering.  Staff can always use the help!
Wish Your Child a Happy Birthday!
If you would like to have your child's name displayed on our school marquee, the cost is $20.00.  Your child's name will be displayed for one week.  If you are interested in wishing your child a happy birthday on our school marquee, contact Melanie Cantu between the hours of 9:00am and 2:00pm.  Payments are only accepted at this time. Cash only.
Safe and Secure
If you are interested in signing up your child/children for Safe and Secure, you must make arrangements after school/after 4:15pm with our Safe and Secure staff.  The office does not take payments during the school day. Only Safe and Secure staff are authorized to take payments.  If need more information, contact Erika Miller Morales at 971-1125.   We do not prorate monthly fees.

Parent Drop Off in the Morning and Parent Pick Up After School
The parent drop off/pick up line is located in the front of the school, right off of Main Street.  Due to the large number of students getting dropped off and picked up each day, we ask that drivers respect school rules and procedures for this process.  We realize the line may be long at times, especially the first few weeks of school, but we ask everyone to be patient and stay in their vehicles to keep the process moving.
  • Morning Drop Off:   Driver's are asked to drop off students in the driveway in front of the school and are asked to follow directions given by staff members on duty. Drivers are asked to pull up to the end of the drive way where a staff member is directing.  We are able to unload about 15 vehicles at a time if all drivers pull up and allow others to do the same.  We have staff on duty to help students out of their vehicles.  Drivers need to be patient and give plenty of time in the morning to get students to school on time.  The school opens at 7:00am so students can be dropped off starting then. If drivers wait until 7:45am to drop off their child in the morning, the child will probably be late.  The best time to drop off students is between 7:00am and 7:35am.  Students are expected to be sitting in the cafeteria by 7:45am. Breakfast ends at 7:45am and morning assembly starts at 7:50. Any student not in the cafeteria by the start of morning assembly by 7:50am will be marked tardy.

  • After School Pick Up:   Driver's are not permitted to get out of their vehicles to take a child from the teacher's line. Nor are driver's permitted to wait in the breeze way of the school or  outside sidewalks on foot for the student to be released.  When driver's get out of their vehicles and approach the line where students are sitting, this delays the process and is not safe for the student, driver, or staff on duty.  We ask that all drivers stay in their vehicles and wait for the teachers to load the children into the appropriate vehicles.  School dismisses at 3:30 and we ask drivers to start lining up at 3:15pm and no earlier.  Follow arrows and safety barracades at all times. Never move a barracade for any reason.  One line will be formed in the driveway and all drivers are expected to pull up and allow other vehicles from behind to pull up as well.  Drivers are not permitted to be on cell phones (State Law) and we ask drivers to drive slowly and carefully to avoid accidents. It is recommended that if drivers see the line is long at 3:30, wait until 3:45 to pick up the child. Again, being patient is the key to the process and allowing staff on duty to do their job with minimal distractions.   A safety audit was conducted last school year in May and the school was commended for having orderly dismissal procedures in all locations of the school.  We were told to continue enforcing the safety procedures and expectations of all students, parents, staff, adult drivers, and bus drivers.
Students Who Walk to School and Walk Home From School
Students who walk to and from school will walk on sidewalks.  In the morning, students walking to school will walk to the front of the school.  Students who walk home after school will be dismissed from the Auburn side of the buidling where staff enter but must wait for a staff member to dismiss the student. All walkers will be expected to sit in the designated hallway to be released appropriately by the staff on duty.  If your child will be walking to and from school, this information needs to be on file with your child's teacher. Be sure to write a letter indicating your parental permision for the child to walk.  If an adult will be picking up the student in the afternoon, the adult must be on the child's contact list.  If the adult is not on the contact list, the child will not be released.  Any changes to your child's dismissal procedures must be made in writing and given to your child's teacher.  Plan ahead! The office staff will not take transportation changes over the phone for your child's safety.  All communication regarding transportation is made between the parent and the teacher.
Morning and After School Bus Riders Are Expected To:
  • Stay in your seat.
  • Hold back until the aisle is clear before you get up.
  • Immediately follow the bus driver's directions.
  • Never talk back.
  • Enter and exit the bus in an orderly manner.
  • Do not yell or scream on the bus.  Use low, indoor voices at all times.
At dismissal time, teachers will give all bus riders a card which indicates which bus your child is to ride.  Talk to your child to make sure the card is in hand, ready to show the staff on duty. The bus card will indicate your child's name, the bus he or she rides, and the teacher's name.  If for any reason your child will not be riding the bus home, the change must be made in writing to your child's teacher.  The office staff does not take transportation over the phone for your child's safety. All transportation changes need to be made between the parent and the teacher in writing.  If you change transportatin arrangements for your child and an adult will be picking up the child after school either by walking or pick up in the car line, the person must be on the child's contact list.  If the adult is not on the child's contact list, the child will not be released. Talk to your child about taking care of his or her bus card.  If your child loses the bus card or damages it, the parent will have to pay for a replacement.  If a student does not have a bus card at the time the staff on duty is collecting cards, this delays the process for students entering the bus.  Please talk to your child about being responsible for their bus cards.

Lunch Visits
Monday is the day designated for parents listed on the enrollment card to eat lunch with their child during their  scheduled lunch period.  Visits will begin on August 29, 2011.  If parents would like to eat the school lunch that is provided, there is a fee.  Cafeteria staff will announce the fee on Monday, August 22, 2011.  All visitors must present a valid ID to enter the buidling.
New Bell Schedule for 2011-2012
  • 7:00am:  Building opens. Breakfast begins.
  • 7:45am:  All students must be sitting down in cafeteria.  Breakfast ends.
  • 7:50am:  Morning assembly begins. Students who arrive late will be marked tardy.
  • 8:10am:  Students go to classrooms to start the instructional day.  Depending on the activities or number of announcements during morning assembly, time may vary.
  • 3:30pm:  Instructional day ends.
Morning assembly is a great way for students to learn and grow in their school community.  Morning assembly is part of the instructional day and students are expected to be in attendance listening and actively participating.  Instead of morning announcements in the classroom, students get to know their campus administrators and support staff throughout the school year.
On Line Registration
The online registration process continues throughout the school year.  If new to McAllen or if you are having difficulty registering online, please contact the office for assistance.  Ask for Becky!  We would be glad to help!  If out of District and you would like your children to attend a McAllen School, contact our office for the application process.
